One of the trendiest recipes to pop up in 2019 isn’t a donut-muffin-croissant experiment or a rainbow pizza with 200 different toppings. Nope: It’s celery juice. Yes, really. The electric green drink has taken over Instagram, and everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim Kardashian has embraced its supposed benefits. Here’s what you need to know about the buzzy beverage.

Why Is Celery Juice So Trendy Right Now?

The celery juice trend can be traced back to Anthony Williams, aka “The Medical Medium,” who has close to 2 million followers on Instagram. Williams claims that drinking 16 ounces of celery juice on an empty stomach helps with a variety of different ailments, such as clearing up skin, aiding digestion, and improving energy levels. It should be noted that Williams does not have a medical degree and is not a licensed professional.

Although Williams has been preaching the benefits of celery juice for years, it really only became trendy this year. Its current popularity can be attributed to the myriad of celebrities and influencers who post about it on Instagram (#celeryjuice).

Wait, So Is Celery Juice Actually Good for You?

Nutritionists and registered dietitians have conflicting views. Lisa Young, a registered dietician and professor of nutrition at NYU, told The Atlantic that “One vegetable is really not better than another” and that it might be better to just chew celery versus juicing it.

But celery juice does have some benefits, including being rich in vitamins C, K, potassium, and dietary fiber. Lisa Drayer told CNN that celery also has “been shown to perhaps play a role in reducing inflammation in the brain or reducing age-related memory decline.” Overall, more research needs to be done to draw any kind of decisive conclusions.

How Do You Make Celery Juice, Anyway?

It’s easy and there are two basic methods for making it. One involves a juicer and the other involves a high-powered blender. Here’s a basic outline of both methods to help you at home.

If you have a juicer: Take one bunch of celery, trim the base and top, and wash the stalks thoroughly. Put the stalks through the feeding tube of your juicer and drink immediately.

If you have a high-powered blender: Take one bunch of celery, trim the base and top of the stalks, and wash thoroughly. Then cut the stalks into thirds and put them in your blender. Blend until smooth. Strain the juice through a cheesecloth or nut milk bag and drink immediately.
